Acting Programs at MSDA — The Working Actor Certificate
The MSDA Working Actor Certificate Program is a comprehensive four-semester acting curriculum designed to transform aspiring performers into working professionals. Founded by acclaimed actor Marc John Jefferies, MSDA provides the rigorous, practical training that prepares actors for real careers in film, television, and theater.
The program is structured as a progressive sequence of four semesters. Semester 1, Core Acting Technique 101, builds the essential foundation every serious actor needs, covering physical action, emotional truth, verbal action, and the imagination techniques that separate compelling performances from surface-level acting. Semester 2, Scene Study for Film and Television, applies those foundational skills to the specific demands of performing for the camera, including close-up technique, emotional continuity across takes, and partner work.
Semester 3, Core Acting Technique 201, pushes students into advanced territory with complex character transformations, sustained emotional arcs, and the deep preparation required for leading roles. Semester 4, The Art of the Audition, is the capstone course that transforms trained actors into booking actors, covering cold reading technique, self-tape production, callback strategy, and the business skills needed to navigate the entertainment industry professionally.
Each semester spans 12 weeks of intensive instruction with small class sizes and personalized feedback from industry-active professionals. Students work with professional scripts from current television productions, building real-world skills with the same material working actors encounter in their careers. The curriculum is continuously updated to reflect the current demands of the industry.
MSDA alumni have appeared in major productions including Spider-Man, Notorious, Luke Cage, She-Hulk, Law and Order SVU, Fallout, Blindspot, Wu-Tang: An American Saga, and Manifest. The program produces actors who book real roles because every element of the curriculum is designed around the skills casting directors and directors are actually looking for in professional performers.

Semester 3 — Core Acting Technique 201 at MSDA
Core Acting Technique 201 is the advanced technique semester in the MSDA Working Actor Certificate Program. This course takes the solid foundation built in Semesters 1 and 2 and pushes it significantly further, tackling complex character transformations, emotionally demanding material, and the deep preparation work required for leading roles in professional productions.
Students work with challenging dramatic material that demands range, vulnerability, and precision. The curriculum covers sustained emotional arcs across long and complex scenes, advanced character physicality and transformation techniques, dialect and speech patterns as tools for character building, and sophisticated script analysis methods that reveal layers of meaning in professional writing.
This is the semester where good actors become distinctive actors. The work is demanding and deeply personal, requiring students to access parts of their emotional and creative range they may not have explored before. Under Marc John Jefferies direct guidance, students develop the kind of memorable, specific performances that define careers and make casting directors remember their names.
The advanced technique work in Semester 3 prepares students for the audition-focused capstone semester that follows. By this point in the program, students have developed a reliable, repeatable process for creating compelling characters and delivering authentic performances. Semester 3 refines that process and builds the confidence to apply it under pressure.

Core Acting Technique 201 is the second and final course in our foundational technique sequence, completing the technical framework that will support every performance you give from this point forward. Where Core Acting Technique 101 awakened your imagination and introduced the principles of character embodiment, this course deepens that work and demands that you put it into practice at a higher level.
The focus here is presence, authenticity, and dimension. You'll train to genuinely exist within a character's circumstances — not to indicate emotion or illustrate a story, but to live truthfully inside the world of the scene. A significant emphasis is placed on partnership and connection, developing your ability to listen and respond organically to your scene partner rather than performing in isolation. Real acting happens between people, and this course teaches you how to stay fully engaged in that exchange.
You'll also refine your approach to character construction, learning to build roles with genuine layers and texture. The goal is specificity — creating characters that feel like complete human beings with history, contradiction, and inner life, rather than flat interpretations pulled from the surface of a script. It's this level of depth and detail that distinguishes a trained actor from the crowd.
By the completion of this course, you'll have a fully developed foundational technique — a reliable, personal process for approaching any role with confidence, truthfulness, and creative distinction.
